Indigo, the profitable leader in a cut-throat industry

The reason behind Indigo's success is the founder's obsession with Detail and Quality. Indigo employs far fewer people, with one of the industry's leanest work forces. The airline also broke industry standards with simple things like turnaround time. This is the time taken for a plane to be ready for the next flight between landing and take off. IndiGo boasts of a turnaround time of less than 30 minutes. Obviously less time on the ground means more time in the air which also reduces fuel burning. IndiGo's aircraft spend more than 11 hours a day in the sky, compared to the industry average of eight or 10hours.

Indigo has realised that in a services industry, where competition is so cut throat, it needs to deliver on its promise, which is not possible unless you are detail oriented.

Steve Jobs, Xerox, Modern computers & GUI

In 1979, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center developed the first prototype for a GUI. A young man named Steve Jobs, looking for new ideas to work into future iterations of the Apple computer, traded US $1 million in stock options to Xerox for a detailed tour of their facilities and current projects. One of the things Xerox showed Jobs was the Alto, which sported a GUI and a three-button mouse. Later, Apple engineers developed Lisa, the first GUI-based computer available to the public. Further iterations brought Macintosh to the world. When Jobs was embarking on the project, he told his team that the computer they were constructing would "put a dent in the universe." He was right.

A GUI is an interface to your computer that gives you easy ways to navigate through your desktop and programs by showing you icons to represent folders, program names, and recycle bins. It also gives you the ability to use a mouse.

IKEA and the store layout

The IKEA maze (store layout) is designed so that the shopper must follow a set path through the store. In the first half of the store, the shopper finds themselves in the showroom. If a shopper wanted a furniture item, they must take note of the tag attached to the furniture piece to know where it can be retrieved in the warehouse – the second half of the store. To get to the warehouse, the shopper must follow the long, winding path through the showrooms. The store layout is also mildly confusing, which makes the shopper less likely to leave behind an item they are yet uncertain of buying.

Next, the shopper is met by a cafeteria-style dining hall equipped with a children’s play area. Now that the shopper is re-energized, the path takes them to the warehouse of the IKEA store. The pathway from the warehouse to the checkout counters is “obstructed” by heaps of random sale items. IKEA has planned their floor design to a tee with respect to retail consumption. As brilliantly demonstrated by IKEA, the design process does not end at designing the perfect final product.
